History of Victoria’s Railways Map

The History of Victoria’s Railways shows the development of Victoria’s railways outside Melbourne. The map has information on the dates of opening and closing of lines, but because of the extent of the historical network, station details are recorded on this website

The map features:

• all passenger lines and stations and several of the more significant industrial and wharf lines.
• information on the dates of opening and closing of lines.
• an exploded view of the compact Ballarat area.
• information on “suburban” services in the Mildura area operated by VR in the 1920s.
• all closed lines which are now dedicated tourist lines
• A1 (841mm x 594mm) on archival quality paper for convenient framing.

This 2026 second edition corrects a number of errors in the first edition, depicts ephemeral stations such as Balham, Mambourin and Plumpton, and shows changes to the network since the first edition was published in 2014.

To mark the publication of the second edition, until 30 September 2026 buyers can receive a free copy of any of the other maps shown on this website with each purchase of this map. Note that the NSW railway map is excluded from this offer due to its size and the expense of postage, however a free copy of the new Victorian map is available to any purchaser of the NSW map until 30-9-2016.
